There are two main ways of entering the industry. Firstly, you can directly approach client side or agency organisations that offer graduate schemes or recruit entry-level positions. Additionally, you can contact RPCushing Recruitment and investigate the junior roles we are currently recruiting.

We also strongly advise that you keep up to date with key marketing industry news and developments so you are fully prepared for any interviews. The best sources of information are the relevant trade publications (Marketing, Marketing Week, Campaign) the quality press, company websites and the Internet in general. Furthermore, it is worth contacting relevant industry bodies such as the Chartered Institute Of Marketing and Marketing Society for advice.

Marketing is a very competitive industry to break in to. Prospective employers are interested in more than just academic qualifications. The key things they look for are strong interpersonal and organisational skills, passion, enthusiasm, energy, knowledge, preparation and commitment.

The creative industry is competitive and fast-moving. Those working in a creative environment need to be aware of the world around them and the trends and developments emerging which will impact on those they are designing for. It is driven by ideas and the original expression of these and includes some exceptional talent among its members.

RPCushing’s creative client base covers a number of different sectors and disciplines.

For example, you might wish to work in one of the creative agencies, which broadly fall into:

• Design Agencies – often specialising in a particular area of brand creation or communication, whether these are expressed through a visual strategy, through graphics, interiors, structure and product or digitally on the Web;
• Direct Mail, Sales Promotion or Integrated Agencies – working on a variety of campaign-orientated projects, whether this is a piece of direct mail which comes through your letter box, an in-store campaign promoting the latest seasonal offers or a new brand on the market, or a piece or literature or print advertising – or, in the case of “integrated”, a combination of all of these.
• Advertising Agencies – creating the campaigns you might see on TV, on billboards or in the press.

Or you may want to work “client-side” – which means working on the visual communications (or creative) team within a company whose core business lies in another sector or within a professional organisation. These client-side creative teams are often found, for example, in the large law, banking, accounting or consulting firms, or within large retailers, or manufacturing companies.

None of these agencies or client companies confine their creative teams purely to designers, though – depending on your background and skills, you could consider becoming an account handler or project manager, or managing the flow of traffic through a creative studio, or even working on the final artwork to ensure it prints as the designer or art director intended.

Whichever route you are thinking of taking, you will need a relevant academic qualification. For example, a BA or BTEC in graphic design, or perhaps a degree in English for a junior account handling role.

Relevant work experience is always useful, and many creative agencies operate a placement scheme for students during university or college holidays. We’d recommend you try to find a placement before you target a long-term career in the creative sector - a few weeks in a commercial creative environment will show you what it’s really like to work to deadlines, handle a multitude of different projet requirements, and still be able to come up with leading edge creative ideas!

But before you leap into the creative industry because it sounds like fun, do your research! There are a number of useful websites where you can get some information on the different areas within the creative sector, and from there have a look at some of the agencies and other companies involved.

The branding industry is an exciting and challenging one, with a variety of career options both agency and client side. Those who excel in this industry are genuinely passionate about products and brands, keeping up with latest trends and developing markets.

If you would like to work client side, you may choose a brand management role, working on a major brand, or a portfolio of sub brands or products. Brand management roles exist in a range of sectors, such as retail, FMCG, telecoms, manufacturing and financial services.

If you want to build your career agency side within a brand consultancy you are likely to work with a number of clients across sectors, industries and projects. Some people start their careers within another creative sector, such as advertising, integrated marketing or design and then move across to branding.

The choice would depend on what whether you want to be in a highly client facing role, liaising with the creative & strategic teams and clients, to ensure that projects run smoothly from start to finish, attending client meetings, presenting creative work, etc. or doing more of the strategic thinking, researching the market and coming up with ideas, concepts and strategies.

To enter into this sector, you should ideally have a degree. The subject isn't highly important, however you may find marketing and advertising related qualifications useful. Any work experience in a client facing, marketing, administration or project management type role would also be beneficial. The key things employers look for are gravitas, good communication skills, passion, organisational skills and awareness of brands.
